2016 NEWS

In partnership with the Putnam History Museum, we are pleased to announce the opening of a major exhibition:

The World of Anna and Susan Warner!

Through a collection of materials and artifacts the exhibition tells the story of the Warner sisters and their lives on Constitution Island, near West Point.

Anna Warner (1827–1915) was the author of over 30 novels (including several books co-written with her sister Susan), hymns and religious songs for children – most famously “Jesus Loves Me.”  Susan Warner (1818–1885) wrote religious fiction, children’s fiction and theological works.  Her novel The Wide, Wide World, a classic Victorian story, was reputedly the first book by an American author to sell one million copies.  A recent article in the New York Daily News called the sisters’ work “a substantial piece of our literary history.”

Each year, the Constitution Island Association and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area honor West Point’s Constitution Island's role in the American Revolution and the Civil War by hosting Reenactment Day -- a family friendly event showcasing the lifestyles of the people who lived and fought during these pivotal periods in American history.  Re-enactors from both wars perform tactical weapon demonstrations, inspections & formations, musket firings, artillery demonstrations, camp life recreations and military drills.

Stay tuned for this 2016 event!

Dear Members and Supporters of the Constitution Island Association:

2016 is our ONE HUNDREDTH YEAR!  The Constitution Island Association was founded in 1916.  Please help us celebrate by joining or renewing your membership: when you do, you are joining a distinguished group of people who have been important guardians of our nation’s history for these 100 years!

To honor our Centennial Year, we are giving a SPECIAL PREMIUM to those who renew their membership at or above the “Patron” level of $150: you will receive your choice of either “Light in the Morning,” the superb biography of Anna and Susan Warner by Mabel Baker, or “Leaving the Beaten Paths,” a selection of Susan Warner’s writing, exalting the year-round beauty of the Hudson Highlands.

When you join or renew, you can help us celebrate our centennial by attending our family friendly 2016 events on the Island:

  • Centennial Seafood Soiree     25th June 2016

  • Re-Enactment Day                  27th August 2016

  • Family Day                               24th September 2016

With your help, we’ll keep working to care for the Warner family’s artifacts, and to bring the history, the wonder and the amazing scenery of Constitution Island to our visitors.

Thank you!

Frederick Osborn III, Chair
